RESUMO

This study focuses on understanding family electricity consumption behaviors in response to income and price changes from 1994 to 2022 across 12 prominent European countries. We employ a unique econometric approach, Auto-selection Models, to analyze the nuances of energy demand elasticity. Our methodology includes the use of saturation techniques, which are highly effective in identifying anomalies and discontinuities in the data, ensuring the reliability of our results. The Auto-metrics method streamlines the model selection process and enhances the accuracy of elasticity predictions. We use Error Correction Models (ECMs) for each country to examine the long-term equilibrium relationships among key variables such as energy consumption, household income, electricity prices, and weather patterns, taking into account any observed anomalies and significant structural changes. The findings reveal varying levels of income and price elasticity across the countries, reflecting their unique economic and climatic conditions. The study's results hold significant implications for policymaking. By recognizing and adapting to the varied characteristics of electricity demand elasticity, energy policies can be more accurately tailored at both the national and European Union levels.

RESUMO

With the acceleration of urbanization in recent years, China has witnessed large-scale construction across its provinces, generating massive amounts of construction waste that pose challenges to environmental protection and sustainable development. This study evaluated the impact of construction waste policy intensity on its environmental efficiency. Firstly, the content analysis method was used to analyze the construction waste policy text quantitatively. Second, this study constructed a slack-based measure (SBM) model based on data envelopment analysis (DEA), considering resource input and construction waste output to measure environmental efficiency. Finally, we built and tested an econometric model of how policies affect environmental efficiency using the system generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM). The findings indicate a non-linear U-shaped link between policy intensity and environmental efficiency. Among all five control variables, population density, urbanization level, and technological innovation enhance environmental efficiency, while economic development and highway density will lower it. This study advances the research on construction waste policies and offers some insights for the construction industry to pursue sustainable development.

RESUMO

Robust optimization in proton therapy ensures adequate target coverage; however, validation of fractional plan quality and setup uncertainty in patients has not been performed. We aimed to assess plan robustness on delivered head and neck proton plans classified into two categories: (1) primary only (PO) and (2) primary and neck nodal (PNN) coverage. Registration at the machine was utilized for daily CBCT to generate a synthetic CT. The dose for the clinical target volume (CTV) and organs at risk (OAR) was compared to the expected robustness bands using 3.5% range uncertainty and 3 mm vs. 5 mm setup uncertainty. The fractional deviation was defined as D95% and V100% outside of uncertainty constraints. About 203 daily fractions from 6 patients were included for analysis. The percentage of fractions that exceeded robustness calculations was greater in 3 mm as compared to 5 mm setup uncertainty for both CTV and OAR volumes. PO plans had clinically insignificant average fractional deviation, less than 1%, in delivered D95% and V100%. In comparison, PNN plans had up to 2.2% average fractional deviation in delivered V100% using 3 mm robustness. Given the need to balance dose accuracy with OAR sparing, we recommend the utilization of 3 mm setup uncertainty as an acceptable simulation of the dose delivered.

RESUMO

The mismatch between trade-embodied economic benefits and CO2 emissions causes carbon inequality, which is seldom analyzed from the intracountry level, especially across a long-term period. This study applied an environmentally extended multiregional input-output model to trace this mismatch and measure the carbon inequality quantitatively within China during 2007-2017. The results show that during the past decade, China's national carbon inequality was continuously worsening with carbon Gini coefficients rising regardless of production- (0.21-0.30) or consumption-based (0.12-0.18) accounting. The regional carbon inequality was deteriorating, where less developed provinces with 20% of total value-added emitted 32.9% of total CO2 emissions in 2007, while this figure rose to 42.6% in 2017. The eastern provinces (Jiangsu and Shanghai) had entered into net economic and carbon beneficiaries keeping high trade advantages, by contrast the northwest provinces (Ningxia and Xinjiang) were trapped in a lose-lose situation with trade benefits declining by 68%. The southwest provinces (Yunnan and Guangxi) shifted from being net carbon and value-added exporters to net importers, stepping into the earlier development mode of eastern provinces. This hidden and exacerbated carbon inequality calls for regional-specific measures to avoid the dilemma of economic development and CO2 mitigation, which also gives a good reminder for the rising economies, like India.

RESUMO

Cultural orientations in relation to individualism and collectivism produced by subsistence strategies can lead to a wide array of consequences for perception, cognition, and emotion. We predict that, as a result of different economic patterns, farmers with greater collectivism would show more compliance with COVID-19 precautionary behavior than herders with greater individualism. By adopting a "just minimal difference" approach, we compared Chinese farming and herding communities that share a national identity, ethnicity, and residential area but vary in their degree of individualism-collectivism. Consistent with our hypothesis, Study 1 found that farmers reported higher compliance with prevention initiatives than herders in self-report survey. Study 2 provided a behavioral choice confirmation of the observed relationship. The present research provides the empirical evidence that economic activities can have divergent effects on mitigation strategies in the COVID-19 fight, and these results have meaningful implications for socioecological psychology theory and for pandemic prevention and control. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between social distress and child health is important and attracts research interest. This study aims to examine the trend of inequality in the mortality rate for children under five (U5MR) over time and decompose the population mental health (PMH)-gradient in U5MR into different drivers at the national level. METHODS: Data from 1990 to 2019 on the U5MR, PMH, and potential risk factors, such as socioeconomic status, environmental exposures at the national level, health behavior, basic water and sanitation services, urbanization, healthcare level, and HIV prevalence, were collected from online databases. We described the trend of U5MR and broke down U5MR based on the countries' risk factor status and PMH. We constructed regression models and decomposed the drivers of change in U5MR disparity based on PMH-gradient. RESULTS: The difference in U5MR between countries with different levels of air pollution and income status was narrowed since 1990 for the high PMH groups. Countries with a higher level of PMH had less significant differences in U5MR between low- and middle-income groups than those with a lower level of PMH. The development of PMH-related gradient in child health is not consistent thoroughly. Before 2000, boys experienced a sharper decline in PMH-related gradient in health than girls did. The decomposition shows that the changes in PMH-gradient in child health were mainly caused by changes in the return to risk factors. The mental health of female population matters more in child health outcomes. CONCLUSION: Although the U5MR converges across countries, the reason varies. The PMH gradient in child mortality is mainly explained by the change in the return to risk factors. The PMH-gradient health disparity in boys is larger than that in girls in 2019, which indicates that boys' health may be more vulnerable to the development of PMH recently. The findings remind us that we need to pay attention to the hidden reasons for the growth of disparity. It also suggests that improving PMH has a great impact on reducing PMH-related health disparity, especially for boys. Our research contributes to the understanding of the transition of PMH-related health disparity in U5MR and provides policy implications for reducing gender disparity in child health.

RESUMO

The impact of technological innovation on water pollution is an important parameter to determine and monitor while promoting and furthering a region's economic development. Here, exploratory spatial data analysis was used to analyze: the spatial patterns of technological innovation and water pollution in the Yangtze River, the changes in technical innovation and the resulting changes in water pollution, and the impact of technological innovation on water pollution. The following major inferences were drawn from the obtained results: (1) The spatial pattern of innovation input has a single-center structure that tends to spread. The patent innovation output has evolved, from a single spatial pattern with Shanghai as the core to a diffusion structure with three cores-Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Nanjing. (2) The aggregation mode of water pollution has evolved from the original "Z" mode to a new mode of core agglomeration, and water pollution is constantly being reduced. (3) The trends of change in patent innovation output and innovation input are roughly the same, while the trends of both and that of water pollution are contrary to each other. (4) The correlations between innovation input, patented innovation output, and water pollution are relatively low. From the perspective of spatial distribution, the number of cities with medium and high levels of gray correlation with water pollution is the same.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: 18F-FDG PET/CT has an important role in the evaluation of fever of unknown origin (FUO) and inflammation of unknown origin (IUO). Our study was to investigate the current status of the inclusion of 18F-FDG PET/CT within FUO/ IUO diagnostic work-up and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of it in China. METHODS: A total of 741 FUO/IUO patients admitted to our hospital from January 2012 to December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The clinical characteristic, medical expenses to reach diagnosis and the proportion of definite etiological diagnosis achieved upon hospital discharge were compared between patients examined by 18F-FDG PET/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT group) and patients not examined by 18F-FDG PET/CT (non-18F-FDG PET/CT group). RESULTS: The mean age, proportion of critically-ill patients, proportion of rheumatologic diseases, the number of examinations and hospitalisation days to reach diagnosis in the 18F-FDG PET/CT group were significantly higher than those in the non-18F-FDG PET/CT group. The mean medical costs of 18F-FDG PET/CT group were significantly higher than those of non-18F-FDG PET/CT group, whereas the proportion of definite etiological diagnosis achieved upon hospital discharge of 18F-FDG PET/CT group was significantly higher than that of non-18F-FDG PET/CT group. The mean hospitalisation days and mean medical costs before diagnosis were significantly lower in patients who undertook 18F-FDG PET/CT ≤ 7 days after hospital admission than those in patients who undertook 18F-FDG PET/CT > 7 days after hospital admission. CONCLUSIONS: 18F-FDG PET/CT is mostly used in critically-ill and hard-to-diagnose FUO/IUO patients currently in China, which may conceal its cost-effective advantage. While the early use of 18F-FDG PET/CT according to patient characteristics and etiological clues could help to reduce hospitalization stay, limit medical costs, thus producing its diagnostic effect to the great extent.

RESUMO

In the face of the severe challenge of global warming, promoting low-carbon emission reductions is an important measure to cope with global climate change and achieve a green cycle of sustainable development. The purpose of this study was to reveal the spatial heterogeneity of carbon emissions and the influencing factors in 286 prefecture-level-and-above cities in China, and to provide an empirical basis for the formulation of low-carbon emission reduction policies in China. This study used a combination of comparative analysis, regional difference analysis, correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and stepwise regression analysis to analyze the spatial differences in carbon emissions and their influencing factors in 286 prefecture-level-and-above cities in China, and draws the following main conclusions: (1) From 2005 to 2015, regional differences in six sectors, including household carbon emissions, widened in the 286 prefecture-level-and-above cities in China, while regional differences in 14 sectors, including rural household carbon emissions, narrowed. (2) There were significant intra-group differences in urban household carbon emissions, and the contributions to intra-group differences in carbon emissions differed across the six sectors in the northeast, east, central, and west regions. (3) Although the total and average carbon emissions of each sector increased from 2005 to 2015, China's carbon emission intensity was decreasing, and carbon productivity is increasing. (4) Carbon emissions per capita (CCE) were positively correlated with GRP per capita, industrial SO2 emissions per capita, and the proportion of employees in the secondary sector, and negatively correlated with population density and the proportion of employees in the tertiary sector. (5) Resident savings and consumption factors, pollution emission factors, and economic structure factors had a facilitating effect on CCE, while population density factors and economic growth factors have a weakening effect on CCE.

RESUMO

The environmental-friendly and economic benefits generated from photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) wastewater treatment have attracted significant attention. This process of resource recovery can produce PSB biomass and high-value substances including single cell protein, Coenzyme Q10, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), 5-aminolevulinic acid, carotenoids, bacteriocin, and polyhydroxy chain alkyl esters, etc. for application in various fields, such as agriculture, medical treatment, chemical, animal husbandry and food industry while treating wastewaters. The main contents of this review are summarized as follows: physiological characteristics, mechanism and application of PSB and potential of single cell protein (SCP) production are described; PSB wastewater treatment technology, including procedures and characteristics, typical cases, influencing factors and bioresource recovery by membrane bioreactor are detailed systematically. The future development of PSB-based resource recovery and wastewater treatment are also provided, particularly concerning PSB-membrane reactor (MBR) process, regulation of biosynthesis mechanism of high-value substances and downstream separation and purification technology. This will provide a promising and new alternative for wastewater treatment recycling.

RESUMO

A clear understanding of the physicochemical, compositional, morphological properties and heavy metal leaching behaviours of municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerated fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) are essential to guide their respective re-utilizations. In this study, FA and BA collected from three MSW incinerator plants located in Xiamen were systematically exploited. Results indicated that FA in the three plants exhibited more porous structures than BA, and the particle sizes of FA and BA were 45-295 µm and >3000 µm, respectively. However, both ashes showed similar main mineralogical crystalline phases of Ca(OH)2, CaCO3 and SiO2, indicative of high feasibilities in manufacturing cement, bricks or construction materials. Additionally, the heavy metal migration of MSW into leachate, flue gas, FA and BA were all specifically measured in this study to provide full data analyses and in-depth understandings of heavy metal migrations, manifesting that the heavy metals of MSW majorly migrated into the FA and BA with clearly discrepant metal ratios and only a very small fraction migrated into the leachate and flue gas. To maximumly reuse both FA and BA, importantly, the green degree and cost-benefit analysis methods were integrated into this study to evaluate their re-utilization alternatives on environmental impacts and economic benefits, and results implied that FA was beneficial for re-utilizing as aggregates in bricks while BA was optimum as paving materials. This study provides overall systematic perspectives on guiding the re-utilization of FA/BA from the MSW incinerators and also considers their environmental and economic benefits for future long-term management.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To establish the cost-effectiveness of dacomitinib compared to gefitinib from the Chinese healthcare system perspective. PATIENTS: Advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harbouring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. METHODS: Partitioned survival analysis was undertaken to examine the cost-effectiveness of dacomitinib utilising individual patient data (IPD) from the pivotal randomised controlled trial (RCT) (ARCHER 1050). The three health states modelled were progression-free, post-progression, and death. Parametric survival distributions were fitted to IPD against the Kaplan-Meier survival curves corresponding to progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) outcomes by randomised groups. Costs included drug acquisition and administration, outpatient management (outpatient consultation and examinations), and best supportive care costs. Utility weights were sourced from the pivotal trial and other published literature. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was calculated with costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) discounted at an annual rate of 5%. Both deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were undertaken. RESULTS: In the base case, dacomitinib (CNY 265,512 and 1.95 QALY) was associated with higher costs and QALY gains compared to gefitinib (CNY 247,048 and 1.61 QALYs), resulting in an ICER of CNY 58,947/QALY. Using the empirical WTP/QALY threshold, dacomitinib is a cost-effective treatment strategy for patients with EGFR-mutation-positive advanced NSCLC. The probabilistic sensitivity analysis suggested that dacomitinib had a 97% probability of being cost-effective. CONCLUSIONS: Dacomitinib is a cost-effective treatment strategy in treating patients with EGFR-mutation-positive NSCLC from the Chinese healthcare system perspective. The uncertainty around the cost-effectiveness of dacomitinib could be reduced if long-term survival data become available. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT01024413.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The vulnerability of cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients' health abilities, combined with the severity of the disease and the overlapping risk factors, leads such people to bear the economic burden of the disease due to the medical services. We estimated the economic burden of CVD and identified the weak link in the design of the medical insurance. METHODS: Data from 5610 middle-aged and elderly with CVD were drawn from the 2015 wave of "China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study" (CHARLS). The recommended method of the "World Health Organization" (WHO) was adopted to calculate "catastrophic health expenditure" (CHE), "impoverishment by medical expenses" (IME), and applied the treatment-effect model to analyze the determinants of CHE. RESULTS: The incidence of CHE was 19.9% for the elderly families with CVD members, which was 3.6% higher than for uninsured families (16.3%). Families with CVD combined with > 3 other chronic diseases (38.88%) were the riskiest factor for the high CHE in the new rural cooperative medical system (NCMS). Moreover, families with members > 75 years old (33.33%), having two chronic disease (30.74%), and families having disabled members (33.33%), hospitalization members (32.41%) were identified as the high risky determinants for the high CHE in NCMS. CONCLUSIONS: Elderly with physical vulnerabilities were more prone to CHE. The medical insurance only reduced barriers to accessing health resources for elderly with CVD; however it lacked the policy inclination for high-utilization populations, and had poorly accurate identification of the vulnerable characteristics of CVD, which in turn affects the economic protection ability of the medical insurance. The dispersion between the multiple medical security schemes leads to the existence of blind spots in the economic risk protection of individuals and families.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a big issue of critical care. It is well known that bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an automated external defibrillator (AED) used did improve the survival rate. Therefore, CPR education including basic life support (BLS) and AED has been advocated for years. It showed significant improvement of knowledge and willingness to perform CPR through adolescents after the course. However, little is known regarding the ability and learning effectiveness of school students who attend such courses. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the CPR effectiveness of both adolescents (12 years old) and adults who undergo the same course of BLS and AED. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Sixth-grade elementary school students in Northern Taiwan were selected to compare with the adult group. Both took 90 minutes of the BLS and AED course by the doctor with BLS instructor qualification. The primary outcomes were CPR quality and passing or failing the skill examination parameters. The secondary outcome was the posttraining written test and questionnaire of CPR willingness. RESULTS: In the written test, there was a statistical difference in the pretest score except AED knowledge, but no difference was revealed in the posttest score. No statistical difference in CPR quality was noted. In the skill examination, only checking breathing status had statistical difference (elementary group (71%) vs. adult group (86%) (p=0.003)). CONCLUSION: We revealed that sixth-grade elementary students' performance in CPR and AED was similar to that of adults after completing the current 90-minute course. Therefore, we strongly advocate offering CPR and AED courses to 12-year-old children, and these courses should emphasize checking the victim's breathing status.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the magnitude of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) attributable to critical disease, especially in the middle-aged and elderly population. This research aimed to exploring the key aspects of how the health insurance fails to protect the middle-aged and elderly against CHE in the past five years. And propose corresponding measures to improve. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2011 to 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The method was adapted from WHO to calculate the catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and impoverishment by medical expense (IME), and use Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) to comprehensively analyze the risk factors that cause middle-aged and elderly people to fall into CHE. RESULTS: The incidence of CHE of China's middle-aged and elderly population has been rose in the five years from 2011 (10.5 %) to 2013 (17.5 %) to 2015 (19.7 %). The CHE of richest families was almost 6 times from 2011 to 2015. Urban Employee Medical Insurance Scheme, the incidence of CHE was up 10 percentage from 2011 to 2015. According to the GLMMs, families have inpatient cares as the most important factor to CHE. The incidence of CHE increased by 2.25 times compared with those who did not use inpatient services. CONCLUSIONS: The health system needs to control the irrational growth of health expenses and reduce residents' overuse of health services. Government should take supplementary measures to comprehensively strengthen the advantages of health insurance. Raise residents' awareness of health care, enhance citizens' physical fitness, and avoid unnecessary waste of health resources.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We examined the physiological, household, and spatial agglomeration characteristics of the health poverty population in China. We identified weak links that affect the implementation of the medical insurance and further improve its effectiveness for health poverty alleviation. METHODS: A national representative sample from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) was analyzed. The WHO recommended method was adopted to calculate catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and impoverishment by medical expenses (IME). We created a binary indicator for IME as the outcome variable and applied the treatment-effect model to analyze the determinants of IME. RESULTS: The incidence of IME was 7.2% of the overall population, compared to 20.3% of the sample households trapped in CHE. The incidence of IME enrolled in insurance schemes was 7.4% higher than that of uninsured families (4.8%). Economic level, living area, family size, age of household head, having hospitalized members, and participating in insurance were statistically significant for the occurrence of IME. CONCLUSIONS: The original poverty-promoting policies has not reached the maximum point of convergence with China's current demand for health. The overlapped health vulnerabilities exacerbated the risk of poverty among the elderly and households with high health needs and utilization. In addition, the medical insurance schemes have proven to be insufficient for protection against economic burden of poor households. So, special health needs, age, and household capacity to pay should be comprehensively considered while strengthening the connection between the disease insurance scheme with supplementary insurance.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of medical expulsive therapy (MET) versus observation for large distal ureteral stones in China and provide preliminary evidence for the determination of the course of MET by mathematical estimation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With linear success rate assumptions, a decision tree was constructed by TreeAge Pro 2011 software. The stones passage rates after observation or receiving 0.4 mg daily tamsulosin were estimated according to a large randomized clinical trial (RCT). The costs of ureteroscopy, drugs and examinations were estimated according to related price from pharmacies or hospitals, or the guidance price published by the government. MET was also compared with observation by the sensitivity analysis. The effectiveness of MET or observation was presented by quality-adjusted life-day. Mathematical estimation of stone expulsion time was made by using a decision-analytic Markov model under the assumption that the daily stone expulsion probability is constant. RESULTS: In China, the MET was associated with a $295.1 cost advantage over observation. The cost of ureteroscopy has to decrease to $77.8 to reach cost equivalence between observation and MET. Observation is cost-effective only if ureteroscopy is very cheap or the difference of stone expulsion rates is insignificant. The estimated expulsion time was much longer than those reported in above mentioned RCT. CONCLUSION: Due to the high cost of ureteroscopy, MET showed a cost advantage over observation in treating distal ureteral stones in China. The daily stone passage rate was inconstant. More studies are needed to find the appropriate duration of MET.

RESUMO

Considering the magnitude of pollution caused by marine plastics, the present study assessed their abundance, distribution, surface morphology and polymer type in ten sandy beaches spread across three states (Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa) along the west coast of India (WCI). The total abundance of plastics (∼1-100 mm) in the studied beaches ranged from 4.1 to 23.4% (19±1-346 ± 2 items/m2). Location-wise, the abundances of both micro (43.6 ± 1.1-346 ± 2 items/m2) and macroplastics (21.6±3-195 ± 6 items/m2) were relatively higher in beaches along the Maharashtra coast. Surface morphology-wise, fragments were predominantly abundant in both micro (76±2-346 ± 2 items/m2) and macroplastics (50.6 ± 1.5-195 ± 6 items/m2) followed by pellets (43.3 ± 2.5-245.6 ± 2 items/m2). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis of plastics revealed a dominance of polyethylene (PE) followed by polypropylene (PP). IR spectra of the collected plastics at absorption band at 1750-1700 cm-1 reflect minimal surface oxidation. White-colored plastics were observed most frequently, followed by pale-yellow, dark-brown, green, blue, transparent and red. A short-term (72 h) experimental study to assess the toxicity of PE microbeads (∼1 mm) in a commercially important shrimp species, Litopenaeus vannamei revealed toxicological changes. An elevated level of lipid peroxidation (LPX)-the tagged biochemical marker, was recorded only at the maximum dose (0.15 mg/L) of PE microbeads. A moderate increase in the levels of enzymatic antioxidants (catalase and glutathione S-transferase) was also recorded at the same dose. Comprehensive information on marine plastics, including ecotoxicity provided in this study, would help in evolving strategies in minimizing plastic pollution along the WCI.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study is part of ongoing efforts aiming to transit from measurement-based to combined patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) in intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT). A Monte Carlo (MC) dose-calculation algorithm is used to improve the independent dose calculation and to reveal the beam modeling deficiency of the analytical pencil beam (PB) algorithm. METHODS: A set of representative clinical IMPT plans with suboptimal PSQA results were reviewed. Verification plans were recalculated using an MC algorithm developed in-house. Agreements of PB and MC calculations with measurements that quantified by the γ passing rate were compared. RESULTS: The percentage of dose planes that met the clinical criteria for PSQA (>90% γ passing rate using 3%/3 mm criteria) increased from 71.40% in the original PB calculation to 95.14% in the MC recalculation. For fields without beam modifiers, nearly 100% of the dose planes exceeded the 95% γ passing rate threshold using the MC algorithm. The model deficiencies of the PB algorithm were found in the proximal and distal regions of the SOBP, where MC recalculation improved the γ passing rate by 11.27% (p < 0.001) and 16.80% (p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The MC algorithm substantially improved the γ passing rate for IMPT PSQA. Improved modeling of beam modifiers would enable the use of the MC algorithm for independent dose calculation, completely replacing additional depth measurements in IMPT PSQA program. For current users of the PB algorithm, further improving the long-tail modeling or using MC simulation to generate the dose correction factor is necessary. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: We justified a change in clinical practice to achieve efficient combined PSQA in IMPT by using the MC algorithm that was experimentally validated in almost all the clinical scenarios in our center. Deficiencies in beam modeling of the current PB algorithm were identified and solutions to improve its dose-calculation accuracy were provided.

RESUMO

Massive investments in energy industry may either promote or mitigate the air pollution which is likely to influence the economic performance. In light of this, the current work is an empirical examination of heterogeneous dynamic causal interactions among energy investment, sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions and economic growth in regional China. A modified STIRPAT model is developed to introduce energy investment as a determinant of technology. Based on a modified model, a simultaneous equations system has been established to examine the three-way causal interactions among the variables of interest. As a first step, an error-correction-based second generation Westerlund (Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics 69: 0305-9049, (2007). cointegration has been employed and found the long-run relationship. The simultaneous equations have been estimated by employing second generation dynamic common correlated effects mean group estimator (DCCEMGE) for 30 Chinese provinces and cities from 2001 to 2017. The empirical analysis has revealed that the energy investment induces emissions promotion effect while economic growth introduces emissions curtailment effect. However, the emissions curtailment effect remained slightly stronger than emissions promotion effect both at country and regional levels. Further, the energy investment growth uncovered economic performance enhancement effect. Furthermore, the SO2 emissions growth induced economic performance deterioration effect. In this regard, the economic performance deterioration effect exceeded the economic performance enhancement effect. Besides, there is a bidirectional causality operative between SO2 emissions and gross regional product (GRP) growth for the country as well as regional samples. On the contrary, a positive bilateral causal relationship between energy investment and GRP growth is found for the country as well as regional samples. Similarly, it has been found that there exists a positive bilateral causal association between SO2 emissions and energy investment. Graphical abstract.
